ⓘ What do the party and ideology labels mean?

On the ballot, partisan candidates run under a party — in Wisconsin almost always Democratic or Republican, with the occasional third-party or independent candidate. Words like progressive, conservative, libertarian, or democratic socialist are labels people use to describe themselves, not separate parties on the ballot. A label is a starting point; each candidate's sourced positions show where they actually stand.

    • You've probably already heard the news, but you know what? It doesn't change anything for me. I'm committed to winning this seat and doing the work I've talked about throughout this campaign: raising wages, making life more affordable, making government more transparent and holding everyone in public office accountable, including myself. Chris Kapenga’s decision to campaign for another taxpayer funded office while he is still asking voters to reelect him to the State Senate raises serious questions about his commitment to this race and to the people of this district. There should be no question about mine. I am running for the State Senate because I want to represent this district, serve the full term voters elect me to serve and deliver on the commitments I have made throughout this campaign.

This spring there was a deal to send rebate checks, cut property taxes, and fund our schools. 80% of Wisconsinites supported it. Kapenga voted no. He did vote yes on a sales tax exemption for data centers in this state that is expected to cost us $2 Billion. I don’t want anyone overtaxed. And I don’t think anybody expects things for free. I want your money working for you and for you to see it working and have a real say in where it goes.

    • I’m grateful for these two LTEs. To say it plainly, people are tired of paying more and getting less. Prices are up, wages are stagnant, we aren’t in the same place we were even 4 years ago. Gas prices were below $4 per gallon, the US was averaging 375,000 new jobs per month. Things weren’t great but they weren’t as dire as today. We need somebody with his head in the game that wants to address the problems we’re facing today, not looking to fight the same tired culture wars we’ve been fighting.

    • THE RACE THAT CAN'T BE WON? I've been thinking about why I decided to run this race. The race that can't be won (statistically impossible I believe Kapenga called it). Why didn't those odds dissuade me? Well probably because when something is important enough, you have to do it, regardless of the odds and regardless of the polls. One example that springs to mind for me is my kids. My wife and I both wanted a big family. We both have siblings but we wanted 3 or 4 kids (or more). Well we tried having kids for a year and weren't getting pregnant. Then we went to a doctor to try to figure out what was going on. After numerous tests we were told that we were not going to get pregnant naturally. We were told we had options. We could adopt, which is expensive and a long process. We could also do some other procedures to try to help get pregnant (those were unlikely to be successful) or we could do IVF. IVF was risky for us. Again, there were things we could do to improve our odds. Now based on the tests we were told we had less than a 10% chance of getting an egg to fertilize. Not less than a 10% chance of getting pregnant. Less than a 10% chance of getting an egg to get the chance to try to get pregnant. Let that sink in. A lot of money, we're talking like mid-5 figures for the chance to get the chance to try to get pregnant. My wife and I thought about it. We didn't have the money but we took the chance because it was that important to us. It was that important we at least tried. Well we did it. And surprisingly it worked! We actually got 23 eggs! And of those eggs 15 were suitable to be fertilized. And of those 10 did fertilize. And of those 5 were able to be frozen so my wife could safely get pregnant. And those 5 embryos turned into our 2 beautiful, and smart, and talented daughters. After it was all said and done, we asked the doctor how this could have happened because we had a less than 10% chance that we'd get an egg, much less 23 eggs. She said that the tests can be wrong. And that's how I feel about this race. I'm not running because I'm certain I'll win. I'm running because I believe what we're fighting for is worth the effort, regardless of the outcome. Because this is important. Not just for our children and future generations, as politicians always like to say, but for everybody living and working and struggling right now. We all deserve a life that's a little easier. A life where working hard actually means getting ahead, where raising a family doesn't feel like walking a tightrope without a net, and where getting sick or facing an unexpected expense doesn't threaten everything you've worked for. We live in the richest country in the world. We have the resources, the ingenuity, and the ability to make life better for everyone. But we won't get there if we keep convincing ourselves that meaningful change is impossible before we even try. I don't know how this race will end. But I do know that I would regret not trying a whole lot more than I would regret trying and coming up short. Because some things are simply too important not to try. #Wisconsin #waukeshacounty #JeffersonCounty #washingtoncounty
