ⓘ What do the party and ideology labels mean?
On the ballot, partisan candidates run under a party — in Wisconsin almost always Democratic or Republican, with the occasional third-party or independent candidate. Words like progressive, conservative, libertarian, or democratic socialist are labels people use to describe themselves, not separate parties on the ballot. A label is a starting point; each candidate's sourced positions show where they actually stand.
How we do this →ⓘ What is a voting record showing me?
A roll-call vote is a recorded yes/no vote in the legislature; 'aye' means yes and 'no' means no. A 'deciding vote' is one that changed the outcome. These are the candidate's actual recorded votes, linked to the official record.

June is Pride Month, and as a married gay man, I’m proud to be endorsed by LGBTQ+ Victory Fund. Wisconsin is fortunate to have amazing out leaders like Tammy Baldwin and Mark Pocan, and I’m proud to chair the 12-member strong Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus, which is working to enact our equality agenda to achieve true equal rights for LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites. Happy Pride!

With big tech companies proposing to build massive hyperscale data centers in our community, we need statewide regulations to protect our air, water, and people. We need to ban NDAs so people know what is proposed. We also need to look at why there are suddenly so many data center proposals here. Wisconsin has a sales tax exemption for data centers, and many communities have offered local tax incentives too. It’s time to repeal the sales tax exemption and end TIF/TID deals for data centers. If hyperscale date centers want to come to our communities, they should pay their own way, meet strict standards, and only be approved if that’s what our communities actually want.

Wildfires in Canada are severely affecting our air quality today—but they’re not the only threat to the air we breathe. We need to keep fighting for cleaner air in Wisconsin!

Our district has some of the best farmland in the country, and our hardworking farmers deserve our support. But when a tractor breaks down during planting or harvest and a farmer can’t repair it because the manufacturer won’t share the necessary information, that’s a problem. Our right to repair bill puts farmers back in the driver’s seat, and gets them back in the field faster.

The issue raised in this article is incredibly concerning. Wisconsin is home to a small reintroduced whooping crane population and the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo has been critical in saving the whooping crane from extinction. But we need federal wetland protections to make sure the whooping crane remains a conservation success story. Link to article:

The bipartisan Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has protected some of our most pristine outdoor spaces for decades, while allowing public access for hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, and more. It also helps fund parks, like Riverside Park here in Beloit. But Senate Republicans failed to reauthorize this program, and Knowles-Nelson ends June 30. When I’m re-elected, I’ll work to reauthorize this program on day 1 when we return to session in January.

For those who don’t know me, I’m Mark Spreitzer. I’m proud to represent Wisconsin’s 15th Senate District and fight for strong communities, good jobs, and opportunities for working families. My public service journey began on the Beloit City Council, continued in the State Assembly, and today I’m honored to serve in the State Senate as Senate Democratic Caucus Chair. At my core, I’m a Beloit neighbor who believes public service is about listening, showing up, and making a difference. When I’m not at the Capitol, you’ll find me spending time with my husband Philip, working in the garden, baking, or caring for our backyard chickens. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve and excited for the work ahead.

Did you know that, in Wisconsin, child marriage is still legal with parental consent? We introduced legislation to end it and Republicans refused to give it a hearing. Grateful to Zonta of Janesville and Cathy Myers for their partnership and advocacy. One child married is one too many. Wonderful to see so many people (and dogs) out enjoying this community tradition, the cooler temperatures, and a beautiful afternoon. Thanks to Philip, Danielle, Jim, and Christian for joining us, and to Backyard Barbecue and the Orfordville Lions Club for a fantastic post-parade meal!

It was great to have Charlie Berens come back to Rock County last week to host a public hearing on data centers with Rock County Neighbors for Responsible Development. With three potential data centers proposed in Rock County, residents have a lot of questions and concerns. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of secrecy from data center developers, especially around the site in the Town of Beloit and Town of Turtle. The public hearing gave people a chance to speak out in a more welcoming format than the tight time limits that are often imposed at local government meetings. I was glad to be able to attend and listen to people’s concerns. While I am continuing to fight for state regulation, including a ban on NDAs, the legislature is out of session until next January, and that means that decisions about data centers will be made at the local level in the meantime. This Monday, I was happy to see the Janesville City Council unanimously took a step back from pursuing a data center on the former GM/JATCO site. There is a public input session tonight on other potential redevelopment opportunities for the site, and I am excited to hear what comes out of that session. We need to be fully exploring all of the options for this site. Also, this Monday, Panattoni, the developer looking to build a data center in the Town of Beloit and Town of Turtle, hosted two sessions to pitch their data center proposal. It was deeply concerning that their first session was an invite-only lunch that the public could not attend and that many area elected leaders, including myself and Representative Clinton Anderson, were not invited to. I did attend an open house later in the evening and asked many questions of the developers, but I was disappointed that even at that session, members of the public were being limited in their ability to enter the room where the open house was being held despite the room clearly having additional capacity. While I understand that some of our neighbors support these projects because of the construction jobs they would create, the majority of people in our community appear to be opposed to these data centers or have many questions and concerns. If we are going to figure out the best way forward as a community, that cannot start with secrecy and exclusion. I will continue to make statewide regulations a top priority for the next legislative session, and I will continue to push for both developers and local officials to do a better job of being transparent with the public and listening to what our neighbors have to say about their hopes for our future development in our community

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about who is helping me make all the videos I’ve been posting recently. So since today is National Intern Day, I wanted to give a shout out to Christian, who has been working on my campaign this summer and helping me make videos and so much more (like knocking on doors in 95° heat)!

I attended the Town of Janesville Planning and Zoning meeting tonight at the Woodman’s Center. It was powerful to hear over an hour of public comment - all against data centers or in favor of a data center moratorium - and to see public officials listening and being responsive to what they heard. We even heard from a 5th generation Town of Janesville resident, and from two young people who aren’t old enough to vote yet, but are concerned about the future for their generation. After the public hearing, the committee voted unanimously to recommend a one year data center moratorium to the town board

🌿 July is National Hemp Month, but Wisconsin’s hemp industry is facing an uncertain future. I helped author legislation this session to do what should have been done from the start: protect kids and consumers with age limits, product testing, and labeling requirements - without hurting responsible hemp businesses. Instead, Congress chose to ban many hemp-derived products beginning this November. That’s the wrong approach. We need Congress to reverse this ban. And Wisconsin should still pass smart regulations and create a state licensing program so our hemp farmers, processors, retailers, and consumers aren’t caught in the crossfire. I’ll keep fighting for full cannabis legalization. In the meantime, I’m fighting to protect Wisconsin jobs, support small businesses, and make sure adults can continue to access safe, tested hemp products from businesses they trust.

After years of stabilizing our child care industry and holding down costs for parents, direct state funding for child care providers, originally called Child Care Counts, ended June 30. Without this funding, up to 25% of providers have said they may close, and others will raise prices at a time when families can’t afford it. I’m committed to prioritizing child care funding in the next state budget.

Sometimes, all it takes is one issue in your backyard to get people engaged in government. I recently spoke at Beloit College about political involvement, the future of American democracy, and how opposition to data centers is bringing more people into local government. Here are a few of my comments.
