ⓘ What do the party and ideology labels mean?
On the ballot, partisan candidates run under a party — in Wisconsin almost always Democratic or Republican, with the occasional third-party or independent candidate. Words like progressive, conservative, libertarian, or democratic socialist are labels people use to describe themselves, not separate parties on the ballot. A label is a starting point; each candidate's sourced positions show where they actually stand.

ⓘ How do I read these campaign-finance numbers?
Individual contributions come from people; PAC (political action committee) money comes from organized groups. Cash-on-hand is what a campaign has left to spend. Money shows who is backing a campaign — it is not an endorsement by us, and more money does not mean a candidate is better.

I'm here on Thursday at Upper St. Croix Lake near Solon Springs. My eyes are burning, and if you're outside in northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Michigan right now your eyes are probably burning too. Millions of people across the northeastern U.S. have had to change their summer plans or are staying inside because of another season of massive fires that are now in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and in Ontario. If we think it's hard for us, think of the hundreds of U.S. Forest Service firefighters, and other firefighters from the U.S. and Canada working to contain these fires every day. Our current Congressman, Tom Tiffany, posted yesterday blaming the increase in wildfires on "decades of fuel buildup in overgrown forests," claiming active forest management has been "sidelined by green lobby policies that lock up forests." The fact is, after all these years, Tom Tiffany still doesn't get it. I'm a big proponent of forest management - in the right place at the right time - but we cannot log our way out of the growing problem of larger, more intense wildfires. And if there's one thing we can be certain of, it's that with a changing climate, we are going to see more extreme heat like we've seen this week, more severe wind events, more flash floods, and more extreme wildfires like these in the years ahead. And we need to make the investments today to reduce those risks and respond to those events. But Representative Tiffany has long been one of Washington's most dedicated zealots for disinvesting in the U.S. Forest Service and the other federal agencies that lead our responses to wildfires. In fact, last year Tiffany voted for a budget bill that rescinded funding for the very Forest Service programs that reduce wildfire fuel and protect old-growth forests, while mandating a sharp increase in commercial logging with no new resources to manage it safely. This is exactly the wrong time to walk away from our investment in public lands and the people who care for them for ALL their benefits. Climate change affects all of us, and it's not going to slow its acceleration without decisive, informed, bold action. Wisconsinites deserve a Congressman who understands what's at stake and who will tell the truth about what's happening to our air, water and land – and who isn't beholden to fossil fuel company lobbyists. I want to go to Washington next year and help do that work for all of us. We'll get through this together if we work together. #WIPrimary #ClimateChange #WildfireProtection #WisconsinStrong #PolicyMatters #CommonSenseLeadership #WisconsinValues #FredClark #Wisconsin

Fred’s 7th CD Republican opponent Michael Alfonso posted a totally untrue thing on his Facebook campaign page back in May claiming that Fred – a long-time hunter and gun owner – "hates the Second Amendment." Wowza. Fred responded with a video from his basement gun safe asking Michael to show us HIS guns. Michael Alfonso actually has no clue whether Fred supports the Second Amendment or how deep Fred’s conservationist roots go. Apparently he’s never bothered to learn. In fact Fred was one of the Democrats who voted to support Wisconsin’s concealed carry legislation in 2012. Mr. Alfonso has also been missing some of his other homework too, dodging public debates and forums, choosing to let his corporate-fueled Super PAC cash speak on his behalf. Following that May exchange, Fred challenged Alfonso to a debate and Alfonso responded, "Fred Clark, I'd love to. You have my number." For almost two months, Clark’s campaign has attempted to reach the Alfonso campaign via phone and email, with no response. Alfonso has also refused to appear alongside his Republican primary opponents, causing at least one frustrated organizer to stage an empty chair as a stand-in to represent him. When the two candidates met at a dairy breakfast on Saturday, Michael only offered a vague suggestion for an August debate that his people would arrange. Vague offers for possible future commitments are not what voters deserve! It’s clear Michael is not ready to debate candidates for either party, even when he’s made a commitment. If Michael wants to serve in Congress, it’s past time for him to answer questions and share his beliefs and qualifications to represent Northern Wisconsin. Our new website, “Where’s Alfonso” is seeking help from residents of the 7th Congressional District in getting Alfonso to live up to his word and hold a debate - any debate! www.wheresalfonso.com Your support for our campaign is important! Can you help us keep an eye on Michael Alfonso? It’s time for the serious candidates for Congress to stand up and be counted.

Our Wisconsin Farmers Union bi-partisan Congressional Candidate forum in Star Prairie yesterday brought out a great crowd and tough questions for all of us about how we support farmers, support healthy foods, clean air and clean water, and how we diversify our farm economy and strengthen our farm communities. There were two empty chairs for Jessi Ebben and Michael Alfonso who did not attend - they might have learned some things. Big thanks to WFU staff for organizing, and to members of the Polk Burnett Farm Bureau for hosting a farm tour last night down the road at Friendshuh Farms in Clear Lake. It's up to all of us to help support our family farms and ensure they can thrive for years to come in increasingly challenging markets and with a farm policy that has not kept up. We'll have more video from this session in later posts. And I look forward to being a champion for our farm futures in the next Congress!

I was just talking to a reporter yesterday who asked me about my Republican opponent Michael Alfonso. I told him I thought Michael was a sincere, likeable young man. But just hours later, Michael put out a bald-faced lie claiming that I hate the Second Amendment. Oh, Michael! I’ve been a gun owner for most of my life. So I just released a video welcoming people to see my gun safe. And I asked Michael to show us the guns he owns. The Second Amendment isn't going anywhere on my watch. But it looks like this campaign is heating up, and we’re going to need to start early on separating the truth from the bullshit. And I would love to have your support. You maybe read that ourTransportation Secretary Sean Duffy and his family, including my opponent Michael Alfonso, spent seven months driving around the country on this epic road trip, paid for by the very companies Duffy’s supposed to be in charge of regulating. Companies like Toyota, Boeing, and Shell Oil that all have important business before the DOT. When I was a state legislator we all knew the ethics rules. No lunches, trips, or anything paid for by lobbyists. Pretty simple stuff. So how is it that Sean Duffy who's in charge of an agency with a $100+ Billion budget doesn’t know this? It’s just one more example of the absurd level of swampiness and corruption this administration has taken on so openly and brazenly that they don’t even try to hide it anymore. And now road builders and trucking companies from all over the country have decided to pour money into a northern Wisconsin Congressional election that most of them couldn't even find on a map, showing that the corruption from Washington today is trickling down here at home too. One thing I'm certain of is that voters from left, right, and center all see the outside influence in this election for what it is, and they don't like it. I’m running for Congress to restore a government we can trust. Your contributions send a message that people can win over corporate interests, and that ethics still matter. Can you make a contribution today to help shine the light on corruption? See the link below. Our whole team is so grateful to have you and 1200 other people standing with us!

🌱 "I know farmers and loggers who won't tell their kids to go into the family business anymore." That's a hard truth I shared at the Wisconsin Farmer's Forum — when the system only rewards a handful of commodity crops and margins keep shrinking, there's no path in for the next generation. But there are real reasons for hope: 🌾 Grass-based agriculture is opening doors for small farms with far less capital needed to start 🌾 Perennial systems mean better land use, healthier soil and water, and real profitability at a small scale 🌾 Groups like the Farmers Union are leading the way on these alternatives The bottom line: none of this scales without stable markets and prices that actually cover the cost of production. That's the fight I am ready to take to Congress. 🚜 "Farmers want a strong market, not a bailout check." At the Wisconsin Farmer's Forum, I addressed the twin crises facing WI agriculture: Land access — with land running $10,000/acre, young farmers with the drive and skill to work it can't even get in the door. We need real programs to help the next generation break in. Market stability — farmers don't want handouts, they want fair, functioning markets. Instead, a chaotic tariff war has thrown trade policy into chaos, and it's helping fuel a farm crisis that's only getting worse. My two cents: policy should set farmers up to succeed in the market — not clean up after failures caused by Washington. Powwows are one of the most important events of the year for tribal communities and an opportunity for members to come together, share traditions, food, music and dancing, to celebrate acheivements, and to recognize losses. The Lac Courte Oreilles Honor the Earth Powwow is all of that, and for hundreds of non-tribal visitors and guests, it's an education in culture and community. Seeing the Grand Entry and all of the men, women, and children dancing in their regalia accompanied by drumming circles is a powerful experience for everyone. Rick St. Germaine invited Charly Ray and me to say a few words this afternoon as candidates. I used my minute to stress the importance of having a federal government that follows the Constitution, that respects the dignity of every person on American soil, and that honors the treaties, agreements, and solemn trust obligations we have entered into with native peoples across America. Our words should mean something.

While Americans have each paid more than $2500 as a result of the President’s tariff wars and higher costs of gasoline caused by the chaotic war in Iran, the President's own financial disclosures tell a very different story. It’s now a documented fact that the President, his sons, and the people around him have grown fabulously wealthy while most of us have fallen farther behind. According to the filing just submitted to the Office of Government Ethics, the President’s business interests made over $2 billion in gains during his first year in office — nearly $1.4 billion of that from crypto ventures. That’s more money than the President made in any year he was ever in business - all while he was supposed to be serving us. What's happening now is more than conflict of interest. Democrats and Republicans who are willing to stand up are calling this what it is - a level of gross and open corruption and pay to play never seen before in modern American history. Fixing this mess is going to take years and right now the only body in Government that can start that work will be a new Congress in 2027. I want to go to Washington next year as YOUR independent representative in Congress, and I would love to have your support.

Since I launched a campaign for Congress in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District last October, our team has been pleased by an outpouring of support and endorsements. But none of them have left us feeling as energized and hopeful as receiving an endorsement this week from former Wisconsin 7th CD Representative David Obey. David Obey represented Northern Wisconsin in Congress from 1969 - 2011. He holds the distinction of being the second longest-serving member and the longest serving Democrat in the United States House of Representatives from Wisconsin. I am deeply honored to have received David's endorsement and look forward to helping continue the work he committed himself to for so many years. This is the year!

As we get ready to celebrate our 250th Independence Day, I’ve been thinking back to when I was 17, in July 1976, when Americans celebrated our 200th anniversary. I share some of those thoughts and images from that time in this video - so settle in for a short ride back 50 years with me. In those years, even with so many challenges, we still basically agreed that America was destined to continue making progress. But today it seems many Americans don’t share the same trust or the same optimism we enjoyed 50 years ago. Most people I know today though are still longing for that faith and unity in America that they haven’t experienced in a while. And if enough of us share that hope and are ready to act on those beliefs, then I’m confident that our future as a country can still be strong. If that’s not a reason to celebrate and to get involved I don’t know what is. I’m wishing you, your family, and the people around you a happy Independence Day. I’ll be celebrating with you!

"$50 a month to $2,650 a month — for the same policy." That's what Patricia Gibbs from Eagle River told me when we sat down to talk healthcare. She spent her career in rural medicine, so when she says this system is "very broken," she's speaking from decades of experience — not just her own premium shock. Her take: it's time for Medicare for All. I couldn't agree more. #HealthcareForAll #WisconsinPolitics #WisconsinStrong #WI07 #CommunityStrength #PolicyMatters #AffordableCare #CommonSenseLeadership #WisconsinValues #PeopleFirst #PeopleOverPolitics #GrassrootsCampaign #TeamFred

Hey, its Fred, We have 2 days until the June 30 reporting deadline that closes out our second quarter in our race for Congress here in Wisconsin's 7th CD. And one of our best supporters who believes in this campaign just gave us $6,000 and challenged to match his gift. It's real people like you who help put gas in our tanks so we can talk to voters throughout the north. Your investment, today, of $25, $50, or whatever gift is meaningful for you will help us meet that challenge, and show Wisconsin just how wide and deep our support really is. My opponents may have millions of dollars in outside money. But we have what they'll never have - the over 1500 individuals like you who have supported and volunteered for our campaign. I would be proud to have you join us, and with your help I'd be honored to go serve the people of Northern Wisconsin next year in Congress. Are you with us? Lets do this! See the link below.

My mother was a proud public school teacher, and I'm a product of public schools and so is my son. In my time serving in the Wisconsin Legislature, I served on the Assembly Education Committee and I co-chaired the 2012 Assembly Rural Schools Task Force together with Republican Representative Rob Swearingen. So I was especially proud last week to receive the 7th Congressional District endorsement from the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC). Thanks to the teacher / leaders at WEAC who interviewed me and made sure this endorsement was meaningful, including Bayfield's own Dave Doering, who just retired this year after more than 30 years preparing young people to succeed. I look forward to going to Congress next year as a champion for public education, with thousands of northern Wisconsin teachers standing with me!

The Wisconsin Public Education Network does incredible work supporting our public schools. Their 12th Annual Summer Summit at the UW-Superior this week included a forum to allow members and educators to hear from Wisconsin Governor candidates on their plans to restore funding and assure equity for students and taxpayers for our public schools in Wisconsin. The endorsement I received this spring from the Wisconsin Education Association Council is a constant reminder how critical public schools are for our communities. Our federal government has an important role to play in asusring education for all, and our next Congress will need to reverse the damage done to federal education services that help kids everywhere.

From 2009 to 2013, I had the honor of serving alongside Mark Pocan in the Wisconsin State Assembly. We worked together on issues ranging from conservation to strengthening public education, to fighting for the rights of public employees. Since 2013 Rep. Pocan has represented Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District in Washington, where he has been a principled progressive leader. Today I was thrilled to announce that Rep. Pocan has endorsed my campaign for Congress in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District. Mark said: “When Fred and I worked together he showed he can effectively represent rural communities because of his commitment to work with everybody, regardless of their politics. I am confident Fred will do the same in Congress." Mark joins former longtime 7th Congressional District Representative David Obey, along with former Wisconsin Democratic Congress members Peter Barca, Tom Barrett, and Steve Kagan in endorsing me and our Clark for Wisconsin campaign. The wind is in our sails folks - the primary election is on August 11th. Let's go win this, and then we're on to November 3rd, and badly needed new leadership in Congress in 2027!

I'm Fred Clark, and I want to represent you next year in Washington. For 36 years, I've lived and worked throughout Wisconsin — as a forester, a business owner, a community leader, a state legislator, and a father. If you or your business is paying more for food, steel, gasoline, diesel, or fertilizer — you can thank this Congress. Now more than ever, we need a Congress that works for us. That means fixing the health care mess, so good health care is available to all of us. That means Congress taking back responsibility for trade, foreign policy, spending — the job they were elected to do. And it means standing up to stop the corruption, and holding people accountable. We all want to protect the incredible gifts Northern Wisconsin has to offer. We need a government, and a representative, that works for all of us. I would love to go to work for you.

This week, the voters of the 7th District chose me to be their Democratic nominee–thank you. And congratulations to Michael Alfonso on winning the Republican nomination. I look forward to a good race. You know, a campaign is really just a job interview. The people of the 7th District are hiring one of us to represent them, and to pick the best person for the job they need to hear directly from both of us on how we plan to tackle the issues they care about most. Back in May, Michael and I agreed voters deserve exactly that. So I'm inviting him to 7 debates for the 7th District, on the issues you told me matter most: healthcare, the economy, and ending corruption in Washington. Let's give the voters what they deserve to make the right hire in November. #ThankYou #ForAllOfUs #PolicyMatters #CommonSenseLeadership #FredClark #GrassrootsCampaign #TeamFred #PeopleFirstPolitics

This week, the voters of the 7th District chose me to be their Democratic nominee–thank you. And congratulations to Michael Alfonso on winning the Republican nomination. I look forward to a good race. You know, a campaign is really just a job interview. The day after the primary election, I invited Michael Alfonso to join me for 7 debates on the issues District 7 voters keep telling me matter most. His response? Radio silence. Since then, three news outlets have reached out to set up live debates. I said yes to all three. Michael hasn't responded. Voters of the 7th District, you deserve to make an informed choice about who the best person for this job is. After all, who you choose in November will go to work for you, on a salary paid for by you. Let's give the voters the chance to hear both candidates answer hard questions and make our case. Michael, where are ya?

Last Tuesday we won the primary. Today, I'm getting the boat ready and gathering my crew for the journey ahead. It's easy to draw parallels between campaigning for Congress and sailing in the Apostle Islands where I live. Up to now we've been sailing close to the islands–sheltered water, short hops. But getting to November in this campaign is much like the 80 miles of open water across Lake Superior to Isle Royale: no shortcuts, no shelter, just rig, engine, fuel, weather, and crew. I need a strong crew for this crossing. If you're in, chip in what you can and let's get Washington a Congress that actually works for the people. Donate today. Full speed to November. ⛵

It's been weeks since the primary and Michael is...in Florida with Matt Gaetz, joking about $5 Venmo payments. It's funny until you remember northern Wisconsinites are dealing with rising costs while D.C. spends on everything but them. In the meantime, I've been in Athens speaking with ranchers worried about beef imports, and in Antigo with folks worried about Medicaid cuts. Everywhere I go, people ask me when we'll be holding debates, but apparently Michael does not plan to debate, and he doesn't plan to even talk to anybody on the record in Northern Wisconsin prior to November 3rd. That's a pretty radical strategy for a first time candidate - but apparently his handlers think that's better than Michael actually being on the record in public. Just think about that. Michael, you literally have one job to do between now and November 3rd - talking to voters. If you can't do that you shouldn't be serving in Congress. Sean Duffy and his friends shouldn't be able to buy their way into an election with millions of dollars of special interest money while their annointed candidate hides from the voters he's supposed to be serving. That's not democracy - that's government captured by and for the rich and powerful. But the people are paying attention, and they know what's at stake, and they're voting for change. #ForAllOfUs #Accountability #PeoplePowered #DemocracyInAction #WisconsinStrong #PolicyMatters #CommonSenseLeadership #WisconsinValues #PeopleFirst #FredClark #GrassrootsCampaign #PeopleFirstPolitics

Well, my opponent is in Dallas this week at some RNC "midterm convention”. Rumor has it, tickets run $25K to $100K to attend. Almost no elected Republicans bothered to show up. Mostly just folks looking to get close to party insiders. Meanwhile, back here in Northern Wisconsin, people are watching their grocery bills and gas prices climb because of an unnecessary war and reckless tariffs. And Michael Alfonso thinks now is the time to go rub elbows with the leaders who got us into this mess, or at best did nothing to stop it. I think where you spend your time says a lot about what you care about. I spend my time here, talking with folks in this district, not ducking questions from the people I want to represent. Northern Wisconsin deserves someone who's up for the work involved, and is independent enough to stand up to their own party when it matters. That's the kind of representative I intend to be. #WisconsinValues #PeopleFirst #ForAllOfUs #Accountability #TradeNotTariffs #WisconsinStrong #CommonSenseLeadership #TeamFred #GrassrootsCampaign #CostOfLivingCrisis #InfrastructureForAll #FredClarkForCongress #PeopleFirstPolitics #NorthernWisconsin

Here's something I believe: when you're hiring someone, you don't ask what political party they belong to. You ask if they're good at the job, if they're honest, if they'll show up and do the work. I think we should hold our elected officials to that same standard and ask ourselves, “Is this someone who'll do right by our community?” That's what means so much to me about the teacher who endorsed me. He told me flat out he's never called himself a Republican or a Democrat in his life. He just votes for whoever he thinks will actually get the job done. Don't vote for me because of a letter next to my name. Vote for me if you think I'm the right person for the job. The Wisconsin Trappers Association supports training, education and best practices for Wisconsin's trapping community. Joining their Fall Rendezvous in Antigo over the weekend I met trappers, equipment suppliers, and natural resource educators, all committed to working together for an outdoor tradition that remains vibrant and sustainable. I learned a lot about current trapping practices, and met some old friends, including Curt Walters, my old neighbor and my first commercial insurance agent. It took a couple tries, but I even cut the card in the axe throw. As my friend Jeff Wilson reminds me, trapping is truly our oldest profession. It's good to see so many people working hard to do it right. #RuralEconomy #EconomicCommonSense #WisconsinJobs #ForAllOfUs #PolicyMatters #WisconsinValues #CommonSenseLeadership #PeopleFirst #FredClark

We're at a tipping point in rural healthcare. Major cuts to medicaid have led to hospital closures and we're going to see more. Thousands of northern Wisconsin residents are going to lose health coverage and will go without the care they need as a result of elimination of the Affordable Care Act Tax Credits and cuts to medicaid by Congress. If you're a business owner who relies on a diesel truck or tractor, or if you're just someone who travels for work or family, the still rising costs of energy are hitting you especially hard right now. And because of this Iran war and the oil disruption it's caused in the middle east, right now there's no end in sight. This is just one of the huge prices we are all paying for 20 months of chaos and incompetence in Washington.

My opponent Michael Alfonso claims he supports small farmers. But when I asked him if he thought it was a mistake to allow Argentina to dump 300,000 tons of low grade hamburger into the U.S., he started rambling on about America First. Wisconsin's ranchers cannot have been too happy to hear that answer. This was Michael at his best. Full of one liners about America, but way short of any substance about what that means. We cannot afford to send someone to Congress who doesn't even understand basic economics. Farmers and ranchers deserve better, and so do you. Vote for Change on November 3rd.

My opponent Michael Alfonso supports this President's agenda on just about everything. That includes wanting to prevent states from regulating artificial intelligence and data centers. I asked him about that at our debate earlier this week. In response, he started talking about data centers in Kansas, where he's apparently never been. It's clear Michael is on board with an AI build out without any rules of the road. Voters here at home know better than that. We cannot afford to send Michael to Congress when he's made it clear he won't do a thing in Washington to protect our interests at home when it comes to AI and date centers.

Pay-to-play is corruption, plain and simple. When contracts go to whoever writes the biggest campaign check instead of whoever can do the job best, you pay twice: once in tax dollars, and again in roads and bridges that cost more and last less. That's how things get done in Washington right now. I'm not okay with it. Are you? Michael Alfonso's campaign has taken money from highway builders and trucking companies all over the country. Michael's father-in-law is Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who runs the department that hands out federal highway dollars. Michael says these donors support him for his ideas. But let's be honest–big companies don't write checks without expecting something in return. My campaign hasn't taken a dime of corporate money or a single dollar from Washington Democrats. We're powered by more than 2,500 individual donors, nearly all of them right here in Wisconsin. That's who I answer to. Before you vote, look at who's funding each campaign. Then decide who's going to work for you.

Rising fuel costs are hitting all of us. Michael Alfonso says my solution is to make everyone drive electric. Here's my truck. 🛻 Gas-powered, like most folks around here. Now, I understand Michael doesn't want to criticize the President, since he's hitched himself to that wagon. But diesel is over $100 a fill-up because of an unplanned war in Iran with no exit strategy. And if you can't look honestly at a problem, you won't be very effective at solving it. Ineffective Republicans have controlled the White House, the Senate, and the House for nearly two years. They've had every tool they need to bring costs down. Instead, they keep blaming Joe Biden. I'm tired of this, aren't you? Let’s stop the nonsense. From fuel costs to affordable housing built with local wood, my New Northwoods economic plan offers honest solutions to real problems, grounded in years of hands-on experience running a business and environmental, legislative, and community work. We can no longer afford a Congress that points fingers and gets nothing done. There's important work to do, and I'm ready to do it.

Packers on Sunday. Brewers headed to the World Series. Bow season in full swing. It’s the best time of year up here, and the most important stretch of my campaign. When voters know me and they know Michael Alfonso, we win. Every dollar you give right now puts me on TV and radio so every voter knows who’s on the ballot Tuesday, November 3rd. Can you chip in before it’s too late?
