It’s Peace Officer Memorial Week, and a moment of reflection is appropriate. I became a law enforcement officer in 2017, after a career as a Firefighter Paramedic. I’m proud of my service, and I am proud of 2 decades of work training and equipping law enforcement officers to provide medical care under the worst of circumstances. I’ve arrested some really bad, violent people and I’ve been to the scene of traumatic incidents that I will carry forever. I’ve hugged grieving parents and cried with them. I’ve saved lives, and I have had the distinct honor to share the last moments of life with many. I’m grateful for those who choose public service, and I applaud those who dedicate their lives to upholding the constitution and protecting our neighbors. They deserve our support for answering our call to service. There is more to taking care of our public servants than virtue signaling and bumper stickers; supporting our first responders with competitive pay, affordable healthcare, fair contracts, mental health support, funded budgets and appropriate training and safety equipment are all impactful ways to show support. Taking care of those injured in the line of duty, and caring for the families of those who give their life in service.
